Ukarydee Ultra began as a dream in December of 2019. God has a way of directing our steps. That summer the neighbor had grown hemp and occasionally needed help with various tasks which required a machine. He would enlist Mike's help and through his encouragement, we started to learn about the process of raising hemp and it's benefits for both people and animals.
That winter as we walked every night we would try to decide the best place on our 65 acres to begin this project. We ultimately decided to use an uncleared forest area. This seemed like an impossible task as there were semi loads of trees and tons of dead fall to tackle.
Long story short, since Mary was retired she dug in and began using her limited knowledge of chainsaws to begin cutting down the smaller trees, brush and downfall. As time progressed she added a second then third chainsaw in order to keep moving ahead. She moved from small trees to bigger and bigger trees and learned to enjoy to thrill of dropping large trees.
When Mike came home from work he would use the skid steer to move the pulp wood, firewood and brush. He would cut the largest trees and he and Mary would work together to limb them and cut them up.
In the end we cleared 3 1/2 acres of property.
With time running out due to mechanical problems and restricted burning opportunities, we were scrambling to get the crop planted by our target date.
Although there were still some trees, many roots and loads of debris to contend with we decided to begin planting.
As we rolled out the drip line our grand kids and our son who was home from college, started helping to get seed in the ground. Between scorching sun and torrential downfalls, we spent 8 days planting 17 rows of seeds and 17 rows of plants we had started in trays a couple weeks earlier.
Now we went back to cleaning up the debris. We raked every row, chopped every root out and hauled out many trailers full of debris to the brush pile.
After seven days from sun up to sundown in continued hot, dry, scorching weather, we completed this task. We live in sand country and we were thankful that we had decided to run a drip line system and believe this saved our crop.
Thinking the hardest work would be done, we excitedly watched the plants begin to grow!!! ...AND THE WEEDS.
That is when we ended up with massive amounts of driving rain and many of our plants were buried in the mud. we spent two days walking up and down each row trying to rescue what we could.
Since we were determined to raise a crop that was 100% organic, we then walked up and down each and every row carefully putting lime around each plant to help neutralize the soil.
We continued to watch the weeds flourish and since we were not using chemicals we ordered black weed block.
